Blower
|
Philander H. Roots |
Connersville, IN |
This patent is the genesis of the famous Roots blower. Philander H. Roots applied for an extension on this patent (or rather, on the reissue of this patent), but Roots's own testimony indicated that this design was found to be virtually useless because of excessive wear. An 1866 improvement, patent 56,614, added wooden rims to the pistons, and that is the design that became successful. The patent commissioner also noted that the reissue added new claims that could not be found in the original drawing or description, and therefore any extension would have had to disclaim those new claims. |

Improvement in cross-heads for blowers
|
Francis M. Roots |
Connersville, IN |
The original Roots blower design suffered from rapid wear of the pistons. This invention adds wooden rims to the pistons to reduce friction and wear. This alteration was apparently successful and the Roots blower sold very well afterwards. |
