Machinery for grinding spherical balls
|
Henry Richardson |
Waltham, MA |
The rights to this patent ended up with the Grant Anti-Friction Ball Co., which was acquired in 1893 by the Cleveland Machine Screw Co., which changed its name in 1902 to the Cleveland Automatic Machine Co. In patent 520,019 (1894), Robert Howard Grant added refinements to this Richardson grinding machine. In practice, the Richardson machine was used for the first grinding, then the balls were hardened and then the Grant patent machine was used for final grinding. This basic process was used for several decades. |

Grinding-machine
|
Robert Howard Grant |
Fitchburg, MA |
In November 1893, the Grant Anti-Friction Ball Co. was acquired by the Cleveland Machine Screw Co., which subsequently advertised, "Steel Balls for all Anti-Friction Purposes. Bicycle balls a specialty. Sole Owners of the RICHARDSON-GRANT System of Grinding. Also the N. SAWYER Hardening Process. Present Capacity, 1,000,000 Per Month." The statements about the Richardson-Grant and N. Sawyer processes are taken verbatim from early ads by Grant Anti-Friction Ball Co. |
