Machine for turning or cutting irregular forms
|
Nathaniel Gear |
Zanesville, OH |
Extended 1867-09-30 for 7 years. See also patent 86,605 and patent 99,446. This patent is generally recognized as the genesis of the spindle shaper, although a handful of earlier patents embody essentially the same idea but for specialized uses (click on the "Tool Categories: shapers" to see a list of early spindle shaper patents). Spindle shapers have a couple of advantages over molding machines. Most importantly, they can easily create curved moldings. Outside curves can be of any desired radius; inside curves, of course, cannot be of smaller radius than the cutterhead. |

Improvement in machines for trimming castings

Although this sander is intended for trimming metal castings, it is of interest because the inventor also refined the spindle shaper, and this is a very early patent for an oscillating spindle sander. |
