Fox	Grand Rapids, MI	This is the first commercially successful universal miter trimmer, i.e., one where the miter angle was adjustable over a wide range. The Fox Machine Co. made it in 2-inch, 4-inch, and 6-inch versions. The U. S. Circuit Court of Appeals, sixth circuit, in the case of Fox v. Perkins et al., found that the reissue of this patent was void "for want of patentable novelty, in view of the prior state of the art, as shown more particularly in the Howard patent 57,325; the Aiken patent 111,896; the Jones patent 153,343; the Nichols patent 179,944; and the Lennartson patent 202,445... If the Fox machine could be held to show patentable invention, it constitutes one of a series of improvements, all having the same general object and purpose, and the patent must therefor be limited to the precise form and arrangements of parts described... This construction of the patent is also rendered necessary by the fact that various broader claims were rejected and abandoned under both the original and the reissue applications. Large sales of a patented machine, while evidence more or less cogent of value and usefulness, are not conclusive evidence of patentable novelty and are of little weight when it appears that such sales are the result of active and energetic efforts by means of circulars and traveling agents."

Fox	Grand Rapids, MI	Ellis Spear - patent attorney Abstract: My invention relates to shaping-machines, and has for its objects to provide a construction especially adapted to resist strain and prevent springing of the ram and toolhead; to provide for the quick and accurate adjustment of the shifting mechanism for a short or long stroke of the ram; to render the adjustment of the feeding movement of the table ready and certain while the machine is running, and to generally simplify the construction with a view to making the machine effective and durable and to secure quick and easy action in adjusting the parts. My invention consists in a special arrangement of the ram and its housing, whereby the housing projects over the worktable and holds the ram against springing under the strain of the work in all positions. It consists of a series of gravity-dogs of special form disposed along and carried by the rain and arranged to correspond to the different lengths of strokes and to be thrown into line with the lever connected with the shifting mechanism. The invention also includes the mechanism for driving the feed-table and for limiting the amount of movement of said mechanism to vary the feed. Claim: In combination, the ram, the housing extending over the worktable and beyond the inner limit of the rain's movement to positively support the same in its different positions, and the worktable adjustable toward and from the overhanging housing.

Fox	Grand Rapids, Kent County, MI	Abstract: It is the object of my invention to produce a machine of increased efficiency with respect to the means for varying the stroke of the ram or like moving part of metal planing ma- chines, it being highly desirable in this class of machines designed for rapid work that the stroke of the ram or like moving part be changed quickly and accurately without necessitating the stopping of the machine. My invention therefore consists of automatic dogs and arrangement of the slides which carry the dogs for operating the shifting mechanism and in the means whereby said slides and dogs may be speedily and accurately adjusted and securely held in their adjusted position without the use of a wrench or other tool. Claim: In combination with the ram the bar extending longitudinally thereof and having teeth, the dog slides movable over said bar, the pinion engaging the bar, the pinion shaft journaled in the slide and movable longitudinally therein, the spring for forcing the pinion normally inward into engagement with the bar, and the means for locking the pinion against rotary movement consisting of a handle having teeth and the teeth on the slide substantially as described. In combination with a slide movable thereon, a bar having teeth, a pinion engaging therewith, a shaft on which the pinion mounted capable of rotary and limited reciprocating longitudinal movement, a handle to draw the pinion out of engagement with the bar having inclined teeth on its inner end, teeth reversely inclined on the opposing face f the slide and a spring to return the pinion into engagement with the bar .
