Improvements in machinery for tenoning, mortising, slotting, cutting, or shaping wood or metal
|
William Blackett Haigh |
, England |
"Dated January 18, 1854. Sealed June 2, 1854... The inventor constructs a framework of wood or metal, and in the top part of it makes a vertical slot in which the tool-carrier slides, having given to it an up and down as well as a cross motion, for the purpose of opening or contracting the space requisite for the introduction of the various sizes of material to be operated upon, which is placed on a rest, the tool being then pressed down by a treddle or other convenient means. The action of the tool is regulated by a rack and pinion, on the end of which is fixed a spring to make the tool react of itself." |

Machinery for tenoning wood (and dog cramp)
|
William Blackett Haigh |
, England |
Sealed 1867-10-20. "I employ a suitable stand having at the top a planed face on which is fixed the bed of a slide rest carrying a slide which can be moved to and fro by the pressure of the hand or by a hand wheel and rack worked by hand. On the slide there is a fence which can be placed perpendicular and adjusted to suit the various thicknesses of wood to be tenoned. The timber to be acted upon is fastened by an improved dog cramp arranged as follows: "At the top of the fence there is an adjustable rod having a vertical projection, and to the rod is jointed a double lever having its lower arm for coming in contact with the timber, and its upper arm for holding the timber. At the end of the bed there is a vertical slide having at the top part a slot, and at the bottom a cross bar, and to the slide I fix cutters adjustable longitudinally. At the back of each cutter I place a key acted on by a screw for regulating the edge of the cutter to the face of the bed, there being an adjustable brass plate fixed to the bed for protecting the edge of the cutter." |

Improvements in vertical saw frames
|
William Blackett Haigh |
, England |
"First, this invention consists in causing the frame which holds the saws to move up and down in grooved or plain steel pulleys adjusted to the frame by set screws for the purpose of enabling the frame and saws to have a greater speed with less friction than heretofore, and thereby obtain a great saving of power in sawing. Secondly, in employing an improved chain feed which consists of several wrought iron dogs to fasten upon the timber to take it up to the saws when cutting ; these dogs have an eccentric lever which is made to take hold and let go the timber at the proper time by stops fixed for the purpose, so as to be self-adjusting. Thirdly, in using an improved disc feed wheel attached to a chain motion for the purpose of varying the speed of feed, or in using a cone wheel pulley worked by a chain for the same purpose. And, fourthly, in balancing the frame for the different numbers of saws by means of water or other liquid, or by shot introduced into a cavity in one of the arms or boss, or rim of the fly wheel or other wheel or pulley upon the crank shaft. The pulleys against which the saw frame work, can also be covered with India rubber or other composition, or they can be made of other metal or hard substance or composition instead of steel." |

Improvements in furnaces or cupolas used for melting iron and other metals
|
Adam Bleasby |
, England |
"This invention relates to those furnaces or cupolas having receivers or chambers into which the metal runs as it is melted; and in the furnaces used at present the flame and heat passes from the receivers through a pipe or flue to the atmosphere. "The present invention consists in dispensing with the pipe leading to the atmosphere, and fixing to the receiver near the cupola or furnace one or more vertical taper pipes, to which are fixed one or more horizontal or inclined pipes leading to the interior of the cupola or furnace into the coke above the tuyeres, by which means the heat which was before lost assists to a great extent in melting the metal, and at the same time the interior of the cupola is kept cleaner, and the nuisance which at present arises from the escape of the heat through the pipe open to the atmosphere is entirely prevented, as by this invention the heat is returned into the interior of the cupola or furnace." |

Improvements in circular saw benches and wood cutting machines worked by hand or steam power
|
William Blackett Haigh |
, England |
"This invention relates, first, to that description of saw benches in which the spindle carrying the saw works in bearings at the ends of a long collar forming part of a swing frame jointed to the framework, and provided with a slot for enabling the saw to be raised and lowered to suit the different thicknesses of the wood to be sawn. "Instead of one feed wheel two feeders are employed, one adapted for light and the other for heavy work, and instead of having change wheels, diminishing wheels, having a constant number of teeth, are used. "The shaft of the last diminishing wheel carrying the small feed wheel works in holes in a bracket cast or fixed to the swing frame, and on this shaft is fixed a pinion gearing into a toothed wheel working loose and having a boss formed at one end as a clutch, which can engage in a similar clutch at one end of a scroll drum working loose on the spindle of the toothed wheel, and connected by a cord or rope and hook to the timber to be sawn; and it is this drum which forms the feeder for heavy work when the two clutches are clutched together by means of a clutch lever, for as the drum revolves the timber is pulled forwards by the cord or rope, which coils in the scroll and gives a decreased speed of feed adapted for heavy work without change of gearing. "The next part of the invention relates to machines having cutters fixed to revolving heads, and the improvement consists in fixing to the spindle of the cutters a flywheel, the momentum of which gives a steady motion to the cutters, and thereby prevents the waved appearance of the timber that at present occurs; and this improvement is applicable to all hand or power planing, moulding, or wood cutting machines, in which revolving cutters are used." |
