USPTO = U.S. Patent Office . Images of the actual patent can be viewed on the U.S. Patent Office web site but a special TIFF viewer must be installed with your browser in order properly work. More information on how to configure your computer to view these patents can be found at TIFF image Viewers for Patent Images.
DATAMP = Directory of American Tool And Machinery Patents . A sister site to VintageMachinery.org with information on patents related to machinery and tools. A much easier user interface than the USPTO's for finding information on machinery patents.

Patent Number Date Title Name City Description
72,147 Dec. 10, 1867 Lathe Box and Journal Aurin Wood Worcester, Worcester County, MA Thomas H. Dodge - patent attorney
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved lathe-box and so much of the journal as is necessary to illustrate my invention, the cap of the box being shown turned back to expose the bearing of the journal. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal central section of the box and journal when the cap is down, and Fig. 3 represents a cross-section of the same.

72,148 Dec. 10, 1867 Improved Lathe for Turning Shafting Aurin Wood Worcester, MA Thomas H. Dodge - patent attorney
The operation is as follows: The reservoir or receptacle H is filled with soda-water, into which the end of the pump, or a pipe or hose connected thereto, enters, so that when motion is imparted to the shaft E to be turned, it will give motion to wheel d, and the water is pumped up and forced through pipe or tube e into the cup 0, from which it freely runs through holes in the bottom of the cup upon all that part of the shaft being turned, and thus keeps the points of the turning-tools from heating, and in proper condition for turning the shaft in an accurate manner. The water, after cooling and lubricating the tools and turning-mechanism, falls into the receptacle or reservoir H to be pumped up again. The friction-wheel d may be covered with some elastic substance, sack as rubber, and the wrist-pin, to which the pump-piston it attached, may be fitted in a slot in the wheel d, so that the throw of the piston can be adjusted to pump more or less water, as may be desired, and, instead of operating the pump by the friction-wheel d bearing against the shaft E, it may be driven by separate and independent mechanism, arranged in any convenient manner, and the pump may be attached and supported upon the outside of slide B, if preferred.

113,824 Apr. 18, 1871 Shaping Metals William H. Warren Worcester, Worcester County, MA Abstract:
The nature of my invention consists in certain special improvements in shaping-machines.
Claim:
The combination, with the reciprocating slide C and head-block D, which carries the cutting-tool, of the automatic feeding device, consisting of" the parts F F', a, U, H, dl, J, Ki, f, IL, and IL', arranged in relation to each other, substantially as shown and for the purposes set forth. The combination, with frame A, of the table R Y R', vertical slide S, feed-screw V, shaft V°, pinions V', rack X, and pinion VP'.
115,795 Jun. 06, 1871 Improvement for Slotting Machines William H. Warren Worcester, Worcester County, MA Abstract:
This invention has relation to slotting-machines, and is designed to obviate the drag or friction of the cutting-edge of the slotting tool against the edge of the slot during the upward movement of the slotting bar. In ordinary slotting-machines the cutting-tool is secured directly to the slotting-bar, and with it has only a vertical movement, ascending in precisely the same line as it descends. The consequence is, therefore, that the edge of the cutting-tool rubs against the surface which it has cut when it ascends, and thereby injures not only the tool, but the work also. My improvement consists in the attachment of the cutting-tool to a block, so pivoted as to rock to and fro and by means of suitable devices connected therewith, relieve the tool from the injurious friction.
Claim:
In a slotting machine, the rocking block Ef, in combination with the rectifying-slide H, the lever k, and the friction-clutch J M, or its equivalent,
116,243 Jun. 20, 1871 Improvement in Metal Planers William H. Warren Worcester, Worcester County, MA Chipman Hosmer & Co. - patent attorneys
Abstract:
This invention has relations to machines for planing metals; and it consists in the application of certain devices, hereinafter described, by means of which the work-table, having a reciprocating rectilinear motion, is made to traverse an augmented distance, and otherwise improved in its mode of operation.
Claim:
The wheel J, shaft I', pinions i', and racks 1" M, in combination with the rockshaft E, applied to a planing-machine for the purpose of increasing the travel of the work -table.
