If you have information to add to this entry, please contact the Site Historian.

This foundry was founded by Nathaniel Dyment in 1870 or some time thereafter. Among other products it made a gang edger; their product line likely included other sawmill-related machinery but we as yet have no direct evidence of that. After Dyment's death in 1907, his eldest son, Simon, took over operations of Nathaniel's many businesses. Simon lost a fortune developing an unsuccessful automobile, the Barrie Bell. He died in 1933.

Do you have more information?

  • Thanks to OWWMer Art Shaw, who brought this firm to our attention. Art has a ca. 1880-1890 flyer for a gang rip saw from this maker.
  • On 2005-07-17 the Barrie Advance carried an article by Andrew Hind on a house owned by the Dyment family. A relevant section is quoted here.
Nathaniel Dyment arrived in Barrie in 1870 and began his career as a Simcoe County industrialist - though no one could have foreseen how high he would climb, how vast his empire would become.

He successfully negotiated the shoals of 19th century business and politics, maneuvering skillfully to establish or purchase emerging industries, and exercising his diplomatic gifts to attract investors when his own finances were insufficient for a scheme to reach fruition. Nathaniel's diverse interests included the huge Mickle-Dyment Lumber Company, Barrie Gas Company, Barrie Carriage Company, Collingwood Shipbuilding Company, Dyment Foundry Company, Barrie Tanning Company, and many more. At the peak of his fortunes, his worth was estimated at almost $5 million."
  • Doon Heritage Crossroads, in Kitchener, Ontario, has a Dyment twin-bladed saw in its collection.
