Patent Number Date Title Name City Description
87,531 Mar. 02, 1869 Improvement in Wrench for Bit-Brace Darius Wilcox Ansonia, CT A socket wrench connected by gears to a shank designed to be driven by a bit-brace. 120,266 Oct. 24, 1871 Improvement in Dies for Cutting Screw Threads John J. Grant Greenfield, Franklin County, MA Brown, Coombs & Co. - patent attorneys
This invention consists in the arrangement within the die-stock or holder, and between the dies, of taper or taper-headed adjusting-screws for setting out the dies, such screws operating, in combination with external set-screws, to obtain a perfect and secure adjustment of the dies.
This patent was the basis for the adjustable dies produced by Wiley & Russell. Patent nos. 303,060 and 306,723 are subsequent improvements.
Corresponding Canadian patent no. 1,765 was issued November 12, 1872 to J.J. Grant, Solon L. Wiley and Charles P. Russell of Greenfield, Mass.
1,765 Nov. 12, 1872 Die for cutting screw threads John James Grant Greenfield, MA This is the Canadian equivalent of the important US patent 120,266, covering Wiley & Russell's "Lightning" die which was the first screw-cutting die that could be fine-tuned for size and that was more effective than the old jamb plates that were used for screw cutting before this. The idea was good enough to spur the creation of Wiley & Russell Mfg. Co. to make it.

298,248 May. 06, 1884 Combined Drill and Countersink Albert J. Smart Greenfield, MA The patent includes the holder for a drill, with a slot for the tapered cutter which cuts the countersink and also clamps the drill bit in place.
The principle appears in the LIGHTNING COMBINED DRILL AND COUNTERSINK produced by Wiley and Russell.
299,429 May. 27, 1884 Combined Drill and Countersink Albert J. Smart Greenfield, MA The key features are the hollow cylinder, and the countersink cutter on the tapered end.
Wiley and Russell's "LIGHTNING" drill holder shares some of these characteristics.
The hollow center and set screw appear in Charles P. Russell's August 5, 1884 patent (no. 303,053).
303,060 Aug. 05, 1884 Screw Cutting Die Albert J. Smart Greenfield, MA The taper-headed screws adjust the size; the four side screws hold the cutters firmly in the holder. Marketed as the Wiley & Russell LIGHTNING SCREW PLATE.
The taper-headed screws are carried over from the J.J. Grant October 21, 1871 patent (no. 120,266). This patent was improved by Smart's Oct. 21, 1884 patent (no. 306,783).
303,053 Aug. 05, 1884 Combined Drill and Countersink Charles P. Russell Greenfield, MA The lips at the tip of the tapered cutters for the countersink fit within the flutes of the drill, thereby supporting the tapered cutters. The center is hollow, similar to the countersink drill combinations patented by A. J. Smart, and assigned to Wiley and Russell (pat. Nos. 298,248 and 299,429).
306,783 Oct. 21, 1884 Screw Cutting Die Albert J. Smart Greenfield, MA The perimeter groove is to insure alignment of the die within the stock. The remainder of the patent substantially repeats Smart's Aug. 5, 1884 patent (no. 303,060).
314,390 Mar. 24, 1885 Anvil Dennis E. MacCarthy Maplewood, MA A grooved cone anvil or cone mandrel for forming and sizing hub bands and other circular objects. The groove is to accommodate the tips of blacksmith's tongs jaws.
This cone mandrel appears in a contemporary Wiley & Russell catalog along with swage blocks and other blacksmith tools.
442,827 Dec. 16, 1890 Screw-cutting die Charles P. Russell Greenfield, MA
442,828 Dec. 16, 1890 Screw-cutting die Charles P. Russell Greenfield, MA
455,859 Jul. 14, 1891 Tap Wrench Albert J. Smart Greenfield, MA Solid frame, with jaw pieces held in place by splines that fit in semi-circular grooves in the frame and jaw sides. The clamping screw also sets inside the solid frame.
Wiley & Russell catalog shows 5 sizes of Green River Tap and Reamer Wrenches based on this design.
519,249 May. 01, 1894 Tire Marker Oscar F. Farwell Woodstock, VT "My invention relates to improvements in tire markers. In putting tires on wheels, especially new tires on old wheels, it becomes important to mark the tire at exactly the proper points for drilling the hole in the same for the bolt securing the tire to the fellies, and it was for the purpose of so marking the tire that the hereinafter described device was designed."
Produced & marketed as the GREEN RIVER TIRE MARKER.
534,180 Feb. 12, 1895 Drilling-machine Albert J. Smart Greenfield, MA This patent date was seen on a Wiley & Russell "Green River" No. A1 post drill.

623,435 Apr. 18, 1899 Tap Wrench Albert J. Smart Greenfield, MA "Turn handle to adjust" tap or reamer wrench. The WILEY & RUSSELL "LIGHTNING" tap and reamer wrenches are similar to this patent, except the sliding jaws are flat in cross section rather than cylindrical.
