Improvement in Dies for Cutting Screw Threads
|
John J. Grant |
Greenfield, Franklin County, MA |
Brown, Coombs & Co. - patent attorneys
This invention consists in the arrangement within the die-stock or holder, and between the dies, of taper or taper-headed adjusting-screws for setting out the dies, such screws operating, in combination with external set-screws, to obtain a perfect and secure adjustment of the dies.
This patent was the basis for the adjustable dies produced by Wiley & Russell. Patent nos. 303,060 and 306,723 are subsequent improvements.
Corresponding Canadian patent no. 1,765 was issued November 12, 1872 to J.J. Grant, Solon L. Wiley and Charles P. Russell of Greenfield, Mass.

Die for cutting screw threads
|
John James Grant |
Greenfield, MA |
This is the Canadian equivalent of the important US patent 120,266, covering Wiley & Russell's "Lightning" die which was the first screw-cutting die that could be fine-tuned for size and that was more effective than the old jamb plates that were used for screw cutting before this. The idea was good enough to spur the creation of Wiley & Russell Mfg. Co. to make it. |

Screw Cutting Die
|
Albert J. Smart |
Greenfield, MA |
The taper-headed screws adjust the size; the four side screws hold the cutters firmly in the holder. Marketed as the Wiley & Russell LIGHTNING SCREW PLATE.
The taper-headed screws are carried over from the J.J. Grant October 21, 1871 patent (no. 120,266). This patent was improved by Smart's Oct. 21, 1884 patent (no. 306,783). |
