Simon (Simeon)Fairman patented a lathe chuck in 1840. It was manufactured by various companies in Rochester, NY, including S. Fairman & Sons, Fairman & Willard Tool Mfg. Co., J. W. Fairman & Co. and Oliver Snow & Co. of Meriden, CT.
      Simon Fairman's son-in-law, Austin F. Cushman, began making Lathe Chucks of the Fairman's pattern in 1862. His manufactory became the Cushman Chuck Co.
