Key to Links for Patent Information

USPTO = U.S. Patent Office . Images of the actual patent can be viewed on the U.S. Patent Office web site but a special TIFF viewer must be installed with your browser in order properly work. More information on how to configure your computer to view these patents can be found at TIFF image Viewers for Patent Images.
DATAMP = Directory of American Tool And Machinery Patents . A sister site to VintageMachinery.org with information on patents related to machinery and tools. A much easier user interface than the USPTO's for finding information on machinery patents.

Patent Number Date Title Name City Description
227,582 May. 11, 1880 Bench Vise Wilson Riley , England An example of this vise is reported with this patent date plus "T. C. Massey" and "Massey's Patent".
927,988 Jul. 13, 1909 Vise Thomas C. Massey Chicago, IL This excellent vise is a quick-release design that needs a single 90 to 180 degree turn of the handle to secure the work. It is very simple in both construction and in use and is well liked by those who have one. They are uncommon but not rare.
A vise similar to appearance to this distinctive vise is the Norbourn vise as seen in an 1897 Chas. Strelinger catalog. The Norbourn vise is unlabeled and its handle lacks arrises and looks like something molded out of play-dough. The Massey vise's handle shaft is octagonal in cross-section and the bulbous hand-grip portion is separated from the octagonal portion by a raised ring; the examples we have seen all clearly have the maker's name cast into the front face. Similar vises include the Sheldon vise of patent 656,793, and the granddaddy of these cam-action vises, the Stephens vise of patent 42,236.
