300,061 Nov. 08, 1928 Improvements in Centreless Grinding Machines none listed none listed, Abstract:

A centreless grinding machine is adapted for producing accurately concentric but differentlyshaped surfaces on work-pieces, such as the cylindrical body and tapered shank of a twist drill. The fluted body N, Fig. 3, of a twist drill is produced in a centreless grinding machine in the usual manner and is then gripped in a split collet 13 clamped by a hand-wheel 15 within a work-holder 10 having a cylindrical portion 11 concentric with the collet. The holder is rotatably mounted on the usual work-support M, Fig. 2, by means of a half-bearing 17 and a blade 18 having an upper inclined surface engaging the portion 11, a roller 22 being pivotally mounted on the support, and urged by a spring so as to force the portion 11 against the regulating wheel D. In operation, several work-holders are used in turn, and with a work-piece mounted therein being placed on the support M while the latter is raised by means of a hand operated pinion I engaging a rack on a controlling plunger G to which the support is secured, the roller 22 being moved to one side by a hand lever 28 to allow admission of the holder. On lowering the support the holder is rotated by contact with the regulating wheel D and a grinding wheel E, Fig. 3, which is staggered with regard to the wheel D, is fed in by its slide to cut the correct taper. The wheel E may be dressed to the required taper or alternatively its slide may be inclined. When a work-piece has been completed the holder is removed from the machine and replaced by another holder with a work-piece to be operated upon whilst the previous holder is having its work-piece renewed.

294,594 Nov. 15, 1928 Improvements in Machines for Grinding Spherical Articles John Emery Caster Cincinnati, Hamilton County, OH Abstract:

A centreless machine for grinding spherical articles, for example, balls for bearings, corsists of a grinding-wheel 16 having therein a series of annular grooves and a regulating-wheel 19, also grooved, the work being supported between the wheels on a rest 43, adjustable as to height by inclined surfaces on a member 44. The balls are fed automatically to the machine, and are moved from one groove to the next, or another, groove at intervals, the movement being timed to take place as the regulating-wheel is retracted from, and again advanced up to the grinding-wheel. These movements are brought about by a cam 23 which engages a toggle to move the slide carrying the regulating wheel, and also has a projection which, through rack gearing, oscillates a rock shaft 29, and this shaft, through linkage 32, 33, 36, Oscillates a shaft 63 journaled in a housing 34. In the housing, on sprockets 48, is mounted an endless chain 49 carrying grooved work feeding blades 50, which engage the halls and move them from groove to groove, the intermittent movement of the blades being effected by a pawl slidable in the housing and engaging rack teeth on the blades 50; the pawl is moved in one direction by a lever 61 on the shaft 63, and in the other direction, to move the work, by a spring. When the work 40 is to be moved into each groove, or every other groove, it is fed in a continuous stream down a tube 05, Fig. 10, into the grooves in the blades 50, oversize pieces being ejected automatically by engagement with a spring finger 68, which moves to allow the work to pass into a discharge passage. When the work pieces are to be advanced more than two grooves at a time, they are fed down three guide tubes, being released therefrom by the lifting of a detent, which is normally held down by a spring plunger, and is lifted by a notched disc mounted on the arm 33 and rotated intermittently by a pawl which engages a ratchet on the notched disc.
1,692,834 Nov. 27, 1928 Art and Apparatus for Producing Ground Articles Lewis R. Heim Cincinnati, OH
304,060 Jan. 17, 1929 Improvements in Grinding or Abrading Machines none listed none listed, Abstract:

In a grinding machine, the work pieces are presented to opposed grinding and regulating wheels by means of a rotating carrier which steadies the workpieces but allows freedom for their automatic adjustment on the work rest and the periphery of the grinding- wheel. The grinding-wheel 10 has a periperal arcuate groove 11 and the regulating wheel D is mounted on a slide C adjusted by a screw E which is connected by lever mechanism G to a rotary cam 12 to impart reciprocating movement to the regulating wheel in order to feed the blanks to the grinding-wheel. A slide I mounted beneath the slide C carries a bracket 13 provided with a work-rest 14 which projects between the grinding and regulating wheels and supports the spherical heads of the work-pieces 15 during the operation. The grinding-wheel rotates downwardly toward the work-support while the regulating wheel is moved slowly upwardly to rotate the work by frictional contact. The work carrier comprises a disc 23 rotating on a spindle 21 and provided with peripheral openings 24 to receive the shanks of the work-pieces. A plate 25 has a flange 26 which limits the movement of the workpieces into the sockets. Intermittent movement is imparted to the carrier to bring the work-pieces successively into position by means of a ratchet wheel 27 engaged by a pawl 28 which is rocked through lever mechanism, Fig. 4, from a rock shaft 33. The indexing movement is effected at the required time by means of a lug on the cam disc 12, which coacts with a rack rod and pinion to actuate the shaft 33. The cam disc is driven through a belt 43 and worm gearing 42 from a motor 44. The finished work-pieces are ejected by means of a member 46 actuated by an arm 50 on a rock shaft 51. This shaft is operated from a lug 58 on the cam disc 12 through a lever arm 54 and a trigger device. The ejecting movement may force the finished work-piece into a discharge tube 60, whence it may slide out of the machine. In a modification, Fig. 7, the work carrier is fitted with positioning bushes 61 having a portion 62 which fits the shank of the work-piece and a recess 63 to receive the ball end. In this case the ejector forces the ball end into the recess 63, after which the carrier is indexed. When the work-pieces reach the bottom of the carrier they fall out by gravity into a suitable receptacle.
304,502 Jan. 24, 1929 Improvements in Grinding or Abrading Machines none listed none listed, Abstract:

In a centreless grinding machine the work guide makes contact with the surface of the work along a helical or other inclined line so that the points of contact become progressively nearer the grinding wheel or vary progressively in some other manner as the work is traversed axially through the machine. The machine comprises a grinding wheel 5 rotated by a belt 8 and adjustable jockey pulleys 15 from a shaft 11 and a regulating wheel 19 also rotated from the shaft 11 through gearing 25, 28, flexible shaft 30 and skew gearing 32. The shaft 20 which carries the regulating wheel is supported on a pillar 22 adjustable vertically and angularly to incline the wheel and cause it to feed the work axially through the grinding throat. Two guides are provided for the work, the front one 38 serving merely to keep the work between the wheels whilst the rear one 40 maintains it in proper relation to the grinding wheel. The guides are adjustable to and from the work by hand-operated screws 42, 44 and are mounted on slides 37, 39 carried by a bracket 36 on a slide 33 which is vertically adjustable by a rack 34 thereon and a pinion operated through gearing from a hand wheel 35. The guide 40 has a workengaging surface which changes progressively from the tangent 46, Fig. 3, at the commencement of the grinding operation to the tangent 47 at the termination thereof, the former being inclined to a horizontal line preferably at an angle of 58º whilst the latter is inclined at 39º so that the point of contact with the work becomes progressively nearer to the grinding wheel 5. The line of centres of the grinding and regulating wheels may be horizontal instead of vertical as shown, in which case the second guide 38 is dispensed with.

306,710 Feb. 28, 1929 Improvements Relating to Grinding or Abrading Apparatus none listed none listed, Abstract:

Centreless grinding; guides and rests; trueing rotating tools.-In a centreless grinding machine of the type in which the work is held in contact with the regulating wheel by gravity, means are provided for varying the inclination of the workupporting surface with respect to the operative surface of the regulating wheel so as to vary the pressure of contact between the work and wheel. The machine comprises a bed 10 hollow throughout in order to accommodate some of the driving mechanism, and provided with horizontal ways 11 for a slide 12. Spaced bearings on the slide support the shaft 15 for the regulating wheel 16 which is preferably composed of abrasive such as emery, and between the bearings is the driving pulley 18. Further ways 18, inclined to the horizontal at an angle of about 45 , support a slide 19 which carries the bearings for the shaft 21 of the grinding wheel 22, the driving being by means of a pulley 23. The slide 12 is adjusted by a hand wheel 24 and a screw 25 threaded in the slide, and the slide 19 by a hand wheel 26 connected by bevel gearing 28 to a shaft 30 screwing in the slide. A strong tension spring 33 is arranged to overbalance the weight of the slide 19 slightly in order to eliminate back-lash. The grinding wheel 22 is driven from a main belt-driven shaft 34 through a belt 37 whose tension is maintained throughout the movements of the slide 19 by means of a jockey pulley 38 carried by a pivoted arm 38, and an idle pulley 89 on a fixed shaft engages the tight side of the belt. The regulating wheel 16 is driven by a belt 42, provided with a jockey pulley 43, from a lay shaft 40 which is connected by a belt 46 and cone pulleys 44 to the main shaft 34. A jockey pulley 47 engages the belt 46 and a change speed gear, hand controlled at 50, is interposed between the cone pulley and the shaft 40 so as to rotate the regulating wheel 16 at an adjustable low speed during grinding or at a high speed for trueing by a diamond, &c. A guard 51 attached to the guides 19 concentrically with the wheel 22, has a depending portion 53 inclined to the horizontal at the same angle as the ways 18 and adapted to receive a carrier frame 54, adjustable thereon bv means of a slot 58 and screw 57. An inclined recess 62, Fig. 4, in the carrier 54 receives a wedge 61 whose upper surface is longitudinally horizontal and which is adjusted longitudinally by a manually operated screw 63. The crank support 67 rests on the wedge 61, either directly or with the interposition of a shim 74 so as to vary the inclination of the surface 72 supporting the mesh 73 with respect to the plane of rotation or the regulating wheel 16, the axis of the latter being inclined both horizontally and vertically at angles of about 3 . The support is secured in its adjusted position by means of screws 71 passing through slots 69 therein and into vertical posts 59, 60 formed integrally with the carrier 54. Shims 77, Fig. 1, may be interposed between the support and the posts. The support and carrier are also adjustable transversely by means of the hand operated screw 81, Figs. 1 and 4 which moves the carrier along the surface 53. In its passage through the machine the work 73 is supported before entering the grinding throat and after leaving it by the support 67 and the surfaces 75, 76 of the posts 59 and 60 and during grinding a component of the weight of the mesh acts to keep it in contact with the regulating wheel 16, the directions of rotation of this wheel and the grinding wheel being as' shown by the arrows in Fig. 1. This component of the weight of the work may be varied by adjusting the grinding and regulating wheel slides and also adjusting the height of the support 67 by means of the screw 63, thus causing the position of the work to vary along the surface of the regulating wheel as shown in Fig. 1. The component may also be varied so as to cause the pressure with which the work is urged on the regulating wheel to be less than, equal to, or greater than the weight of the work by varying the inclination of the support 67 in the plane of Fig. 1. This variation mav be produced by the use of shims 82, Fig. 1. The speed at which the work is passed through the machine may be varied by adjusting the longitudinal inclination of the support 67 or by adjusting the speed of rotation of the regulating wheel by the cone pulleys 44. Grinding fluid is supplied as by a valve 83. Fig. 1, and trueing devices 85, 86 are provided for the wheels and are controlled by the mechanisms 87, 88 respectively.
306,711 Feb. 28, 1929 Improvements Relating to Grinding and Polishing Machines none listed none listed, Abstract:

Centreless grinding; wheels; guides and rests. Machines for polishing cylindrical work, comprise a regulating wheel rotating at low speed, and having an operative surface of a substantially non-yielding nature, a relatively soft operating wheel rotating at a high speed and having an operative surface of a yielding nature, and integral work support. The bed 20 of the machine is provided with guides 21, 22 for slides 23, 24, which are adjusted to and from each other by hand wheels and screws 42, 44 and carry bearings for the regulating wheel 34 and operating wheel 28 respectively. The former is composed of an annular ring of fibrous material compressed to present a hard surface to the work and the latter is also composed of fibrous material such as canvas but built up in flat layers so as to present a soft surface to the work and have a polishing action only. The work is supported by a blade 35 and guides 38, 39, all being lined by a soft material such as leather so as not to injure the work. The leather may be attached to the blade and guides by glue. The axis of the regulating wheel 34 is inclined to the horizontal at an angle of about 6 to feed the work axially whilst rotating it. and the rate of feed may be increased by inclining the support 35 through its adjustable end connections 36, 37. The regulating wheel engages the work tangentially, making a line contact therewith but the operating wheel engages the work over a considerable surface. The diameter of the work is not reduced appreciably during its passage through the machine but foreign materials which are in the nature of a minute film produced by oxidation are removed.

523,022 Jul. 03, 1940 Improvements in or Relating to Mechanism for Causing Axial Reciprocation of a Rotatable Tool Spindle Such as a Grinding Wheel Spindle none listed none listed, Abstract:

Mechanism for giving axial reciprocation to a spindle 10 carrying a grinding-wheel 15 includes a piston movable under control of a reversing- valve, which moves under part control of a pilot valve, mounted co-axially with the reversing-valve and actuated by levers coupled to the piston. The spindle 10 has thereon a rib 16 engaged, through antifriction bearings by a sleeve 17 to which is pivoted a lever 18, one end of which is supported in cupped-ended members 20, whilst the other end engages a piston 22. The piston is movable in a cylinder 23, movements of the piston being controlled by valves in a housing 40. The reversing of the piston is effected by a sleeve 24 having a central groove 25 always in communication with an exhaust line; and grooves 261, 27 always in communication with ports 28, 29 fed with fluid, through a line 30, from a pump 31. The ends of the cylinder communicate through channels 37, 36 with ports 38, 39 in the housing 40 so that axial reciprocating movement of the sleeve 24 causes reciprocation of the piston. Co-axial with the sleeve 24 is a pilot valve plunger 41 having spools 43, 44 and a central spool 42 of larger diameter ; the spools 43, 44 co-operate with ports 45, 46, respectively, connected to the fluid supply, and the spool 42 co-operates with a port 56 in the sleeve 24 and in communication with the groove 25. The ends of the plunger 41 are engaged by levers 52, 55 pivoted to plungers 57, 58 adjustable by eccentric pins 62, 71 on spindles 63, 72, the lower ends of the levers, engaging through plungers 50, 51, the upper end of the lever 18. Movement of the plunger 41 is thus brought about by movement of the levers 52, 55 and fluid pressure on the spool 42, the sleeve 24 thus being moved by fluid pressure on its ends. Since the port 56 is opened and closed gradually the fluid exhausting from one or other side of the spool 42 is controlled so that reversal of the piston 22 occurs without shock. By adjustment of the plunger 54 a variable amount of lost motion may be introduced between the levers 52, 55 and the pilot valve 41 to vary the stroke. Adjustment of the plunger 57 is used to stop the action of the device.
