The King Iron Works was established in 1871 as a reorganization of the Shepard Iron Works, which had been formed around 1850 from the J. D. Shepard & Co. William J. King subsequently sold out to Henry G. Trout around 1880. The company was them known as the King Iron Works of the H. G. Trout Co By 1892, employment was about 150 employees. H. G. Trout Co was incorporated in 1908
